Azores Airlines Stopover: 7 Free Nights Mid-Atlantic on Your Way to Europe (2026)
Rules on this page last verified 2026-07-09. Airlines change things; we re-check and date it.
Every flight between the US East Coast and Portugal passes over the Azores. Azores Airlines (SATA) will land you there and let you stay up to 7 nights at no extra airfare, on the outbound, the return, or both. Volcanic crater lakes, hot springs, whale watching, and Europe's answer to Hawaii, inserted mid-Atlantic into a ticket you already needed.

How it works
Azores Airlines flies from Boston, Toronto, Montreal, and Oakland through its Ponta Delgada hub to mainland Portugal and beyond. The Stopover Açores program formalizes the break: you pick your stopover at booking time, stay up to 7 nights, and continue on the same ticket. The airline is running 25+ weekly rotations to North America in summer 2026, so seat availability is real.
No hotel is bundled. The airline's partner, Azores Getaways, sells optional packages (hiking, surfing, diving, hot springs), but "flights only" is a first-class citizen: take the free stop and book your own guesthouse.
How to book it, step by step
- Go to azoresairlines.pt (or call their contact center, or use a travel agent) and search your transatlantic route.
- Select the stopover option before you pay. Like Copa's program, it must be requested at initial booking.
- Choose island(s), nights (up to 7), and direction.
- Pay. Add nothing, or add a paid Azores Getaways package if you want it done for you.
What's free and what's not
Free: the stopover on the airfare. Not free: hotels, car rental (you will want one on São Miguel), activities. Changing your stopover length mid-trip is allowed but can trigger fare-difference penalties.
Where people screw this up
- Booking first, asking later. Same trap as every "request at purchase" program: after ticketing, standard change fees apply.
- Mixing carriers. Every segment must be on Azores Airlines. A codeshare leg on another airline breaks eligibility.
- Underestimating the islands. São Miguel alone (Sete Cidades, Furnas, Lagoa do Fogo) fills 4-5 days with a car.
- Fine-print detail worth knowing: the legally binding version of the T&C is the Portuguese one; the English page is a courtesy translation.
FAQ
Can I visit two islands? The program covers Ponta Delgada and/or Terceira, and TAP-style intra-archipelago hops exist on SATA's local network (paid).
Is this the same as TAP's stopover? No. TAP stops you in Lisbon/Porto; Azores Airlines stops you mid-Atlantic. If your dream stop is the islands, this is the one built for it.
When should I go? The airline's own summer 2026 operation peaks June-September, which is also the Azores' dry season and whale season.
