The Layover Loophole

Airlines With Free Stopovers: Every Program Compared (2026)

Rules on this page last verified 2026-07-09. Airlines change things; we re-check and date it.

You already know one of these exists, probably because a friend mentioned "the Iceland thing" or you saw a headline about a free hotel in Istanbul. What nobody has put in one place is the actual hard-axis comparison: which ones are free, which are just cheap, which need a hotel and which hand you one, and the single rule on each program that voids the whole thing if you miss it. Here it is, one row per airline, every cell sourced.

Honorable mention, not an airline program: the free (mostly) Seoul layover tours at Incheon (ICN) belong to the airport, not to Korean Air or any single carrier. Any airline's transit passengers with a layover of 24 hours or less qualify. See the full Incheon breakdown for the current tour lineup and the 2026 e-Arrival Card requirement.

Best if you want a free hotel and nothing else to plan

Turkish Airlines. Book a round-trip through Istanbul with a 20+ hour connection, request it 72 hours out, and Turkish puts you in a real 4-star (5-star in Business) at no cost. Ethiopian Airlines is the other pick here: an 8-24 hour Addis connection gets you a free room, meals and transfers, no request form, just ask at check-in.

Best for a real second vacation, not just a longer layover

Copa Airlines wins on raw days: up to 15 in Panama, at no extra airfare, as long as you request it when you buy the ticket. TAP Air Portugal is the runner-up at 10 nights in Lisbon or Porto, with the added trick of a 25% domestic-flight discount that can turn one country into the Azores or Madeira too.

Best value if "free" isn't the point, "cheap" is fine

Qatar Airways. The stopover isn't free, but $14 a night for a 4-star hotel in Doha (with a genuinely free 96-hour transit visa on top) is hard to beat on a per-dollar basis. Nobody else on this list gets you a 5-star-with-beach-access room for $31.

Best for points and miles travelers

Skip the cash-fare programs entirely and look at award rules. Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer allows a free stopover on Saver awards (two on Advantage awards, up to 30 days). JAL Mileage Bank allows up to 3 stopovers on its own awards, 7 on oneworld multi-carrier awards, more flexibility than any paid-fare program on this page.
